Fences by Willow

Fences by Willow
This Drama takes place in the backyard of Troy Maxsons’ home. The characters include Troy Maxson, His wife Rose, Their son Cory, Troys’ son Lyons , Troys disabled brother Gabriel, Troys’ friend Bono, and the woman that Troy has an affair with and Raynell who is Troys daughter to the woman .Troy is not someone who gets along well with his children always thinking the worst of them so much so that he prevents his son Cory from going to college with a football scholarship. Cory is Picked in a football draft by a North Carolina scout. But Troy will have no part of it says Cory cannot make a living playing ball because he is black. The reason he believes this is because he holds a grudge from not being allowed to play major league baseball. The way it is prevented is by Troy is he goes and tells the football coach that Cory is no longer allowed to play and there is no need to send the scout. At first I thought that Troy and Rose loved each other but come to find out that they had an abusive relationship and there was also cheating involved. Troy found himself a fling on the side who he ended up having a daughter with. The woman died and Rose was made to raise their daughter Raynell as her own child. I also seen the meanness in Troy when he threw his son Cory out of the house and made him grow up early due to him protecting his mom from Troy. This forces Cory to join the Marines which we find out later in this Drama. This family is a blended family with a lot of problems including money, Raceisim, abuse, Infidality and alcoholism. All these issues are surely a recipie for disaster. Troys’ friend Bono finds out about his affair and confronts him. Troy does not take kindly to this confrontation and pretty much tells Bono to mind his own business. Troy finds out his woman is pregnant and confronts Rose with the news. Troy has no consideration for Roses’ feelings, dreams or desires. Troy portrays a selfish man. He reminds me of a spoiled child who gets everything he wants. The facts and reasoning he gave to his wife as to why he was cheating and why he was going to continue to cheat just made me sick. Rose gave up all her dreams and desires for 18 years to be the best wife and mother she could possibly be to Troy and his kids. When she receives the news of Troys’ cheating it is a slap in the face because he pretty much saying she cannot fulfill his needs and desires and that she is smothering him with bills and house payments.

Triffles By Susan Glaspell week 13

Trifles
 By
Susan Glaspell
This play takes place in the home of John Wright and his wife. It is soon to be found that John is dead. He was found hanging by a rope in his bedroom. The setting is very cold and suspicious of his wife. The atmosphere of the opening scene is that of a woman who seems shocked and scared. She does not answer the Sheriff when he comes into her home about her husband. The sheriff asks to see her husband John. She tells him that he cannot see him. He wanders why. And the widow of John answers that John is dead. The atmosphere changes throughout the play from suspicion to concern for Mrs. Wright, some might even say that the women felt sorry for her or even responsible for what happened. Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters are standing close together by the door while Mr. Hale explains what happened to the county attorney. Where the women are standing indicates that they may not get along to well with the men. Minnie Foster who was the wife of John Well’s used to be involved in the choir and loved to sing. Minnie also used to take pride in the way she looked and was happy and social. Minnie’s marriage became a suffocating life for her . She no longer got to sing or cared how she looked. Minnie was very busy with the farm she lived on and took no time for herself. John Wright was crushing the life out of his wife and was causing her to really have no life at all. He stripped her of all she loved and caused her a lot of pain. I think that Minnie killed him because she could not take any more of his abuse. I believe that when he broke the canaries neck that was the final straw, she had reached her breaking point. The men fail to see the clues that the women find because they think that everything that the women do is stupid. I believe that what was meant by the line we call it it knot it was reffering to the rope around John’s neck it probably had been tied with the same sort of knot that was used in Minnies stitching.

The Naked Lunch Michael Hollinger week 13

Naked lunch
By
Michael Hollinger
I tend to agree with Vernon. Lucy seems more sympathetic. The reason I agree with Vernon is because he brings up a good point about listening to everything that is said about eating . For example where he said about eating more bran and how it was good for you one day and could kill you the next. I think that Lucy is more sympathetic because she tries to let it go and Vernon made a big issue out of the fact that Lucy would not eat meat. Lucy has become a vegetarian due to learning of the health risk that are involved in eating meat. Vernon becomes very offended by the fact that Lucy will not eat the meat so much to the point he makes fun of her and practically forces her to eat the steak. Vernon feels that he worked hard on making this dinner and if Lucy does not eat the steak it is a reflection upon him. I think that Vernon is the Antagonist of this drama because he seems to be the lesser of the two characters. The centeral conflict of the story is the fact that Lucy will not eat the steak. The final tone of the story is that of anger and humiliation. Vernon changes his whole attitude towards Lucy when he cuts her steak and makes her eat  it. When Lucy first got there Vernon had the hopes of a reconciliation but by the time that Vernon cut Lucy’s Steak any hopes of getting back together were gone and all that was left for him was anger. I do not understand why this was called the naked lunch. The only thing I could see was that he was hoping to get naked in the begining but this never happened.

week 12 poetryblog

This is my week twelve poetry blog. There were some poems that I could not find no matter how hard I tried. Here is the list of poems and poets we had to read. To my dear and loving husband by Bradstreet , Memorandum, by Bolton, Before the Birth of One of her children, by, Bradstreet, To An Athlete Dying Young, By Housmann, Battle Hymn Of The Republic, By, Howe, Thinking About Bill, Dead Of Aids, By, Williams, This Is Just To Say by Williams. The first poem I selected was Memorandum By Bolton. The reason that I chose this poem was the nature of the poem. The speaker seems really hate her ex- boyfriend. The speaker mentions how he used to admire famous people and what they looked like. He also only seemed to want to talk about himself and his problems not so much the speaker’s problems or concerns. Her boyfriend did not seem to even take into consideration her feelings , or how he made her feel when he looked at other women and talked about them. The next poem that I chose was To My Dear And Loving husband, By, Anne Bradstreet. This poem is speaking very tenderly about how a wife loves her husband. She seems to love him so much that she idolizes him, you could even go as far as to say she puts him high up on a peda-stool as if he can do no wrong. I would expect this type of writing from a seventeenth century puritan because they were god fearing people and lived to obey God. I think her devotions are expectant on the rewards she will receive in Heaven for following Gods commandments here on earth. That she believes in eternal life, and that they will live forever in the presence of God. The next poem selection I made was Before the Birth of One Of Her Children. In the beginning of this poem the speaker seems to not care much about her life she has no children, friends or anyone who really cares about her. She seems to wish death upon herself as if she has no reason to live. She felt worthless here on earth and longed to be in the arms of god the father where she would feel loved. The fourth poem I picked to write about was To an athlete dying Young , By A. E. Housman. I think this poem is written in a fathers view about his young son who won a race at a young age. The poem keeps mentioning the runner being shoulder high. The father seems to be proud of his son even in death and continues to speak his name and accomplishments so that his son will not be forgotten. The fifth poem I choose  to write about was the Battle Hymn Of The Republic , By Julia Ward Howe. This has always been one of my favorite hymns growing up . It speaks such truths and glorifys our lord  God and Jesus. This poem tells of the battles we as Christians must fight. But we are never alone. Our father is always with us fighting right beside us. This poem has always been comforting to me because it reminds me that God is always with me and that he will never leave me nor forsake me.

October 29 Poetry Blog

For this weeks poetry blog we had the following poems to read.  We were to read all the poems by Hughes on The following pages 1129-1157. All the poems by Alvarez on Pages 1185-1212. The poem by Marlowe , Called The Passionate Shepard To His Love On page 1239 which I could not find in my book or on line and also Raleigh " The Nymphs Reply To The Shepherd" Pg 134. The poems by hughes seemed to be talking about being colored and growing upas as a slave longing to be free. The Poems by Alvarez talked of immigrants and racial tendencies of an earlier time.
The first poem that i chose to write on was Sometimes the Words Are So Close by Julia Alvarez. In this poem we are reading this from the point of view of handwritten words. It seems to be talking about the fact that no one hand writes things anymore. Everyone uses a computerto type papers and the art form of handwriting has disapeared. The second poem i chose was Queens by Julia Alvarez. This poem seems to be talking about a young immigrant girl who wants to know why people are judged on their color or country or even their religion. It tells of a woman who has lived on their street whos main concern was her property value going down due to the variety of people living on it.The third poem i chose to write about was highto Low by Hughes. In this poem he seems ashamed of the person the poem is about. He mentions how she lives and sends her kids to school she has no class or respect for anyone. He seems to think that this person is ruining the respect of people for their entire race. The fourth poem that i chose to write about was 50-50 by Hughes. This poem is about a woman who is complaing about not having someone to callher own she is all alone. There is a man in the story who seems to like her if she would just use her head..I think she loves  Big Boy but does not know how to tell him.I think big boy is a big jerk he not only wants her to provide him a place to lay his head but he wants her to provide for him to he sounds like a lazy person.I think that the title 50-50 means that she is taking a gamble . If she lets him in sure she will have aman but what kind of man will that be.The Fifth poem that i chose to write about was Negro. This poem tells what it was like to be a negro. From being a slave to a worker to a singer to a victim and finally to a Negro again. He seems to identify being a Negro with lots of hard work .The speaker describes a life of hard work and slavery no freedom for the negro.

poetry blog dickinson and frost

Week 10, Poetry Blog.
In this week’s reading we had to read the following poems by Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken, The Pasture, Mowing, My November Guest, Storm Fear, Mending Wall, Home Burial, The Wood Pile, After Apple- Picking, Birches, An Old Man’s Winter Night, Out! Out! , The Oven Bird, Fire and Ice, Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening, Nothing Gold Can Stay, Un harvested , Neither out Far Nor in Deep , Design, “In White”: An Early Version Of Design, On The Living Part Of A Poem. We also had to read the following poems by Emily Dickinson. If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking, If I Shouldn’t Be Alive, The Thought  Beneath So Light A  Film, To Make A Practice It Takes A Clover And One Bee, Success is counted Sweetest, Some things that fly there be, Water is taught by thirst, Safe in their Alabaster Chambers (1859), Safe In Their Alabaster Chambers (1861), Portraits Are To Daily Faces, Some Keep The Sabbath Going to church, “ Heaven – Is What I Cannot Reach.,  “Hope” Is The Thing With Feathers , The Robins’ My Criterion For Tune, I like A Look Of Agony, Wild Nights – Wild Nights!, What Soft Cherubic Creatures , The soul Selects Her Own Society, Much Madness is Divinest Sense, I dwell in Possibility, They Dropped Like Flakes, After Wo, I Heard A Fly Buzz – When I Died, One Need Not Be A Chamber – To Be Haunted, Because I Could Not Stop For Death,  I felt a Cleaving In My Mind, A light Exists In Spring, Oh Sumptuous Moment , The Bustle In A house,  Tell All The Truth  But Tell It In A Slant, There IS No Frigate Like A Book , Fame Is The One That Does Not Stay.   The first poem I chose to write about was If I can stop one heart from breaking by Emily Dickinson. From reading the words in this poem it sounds as if her heart had been broken by someone she really cared about. She had experienced pain that cut so deep into her soul that she did not wish this kind of misery on anyone else. The next poem I chose to write about was success is counted Sweetest by Emily Dickinson.  This poem talks about success as being the thing that the less fortunate strive to achieve and when they do it means so much more to them than those that reach success easily. It is kind of like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I agree with this definition of success. I believe that to comprehend means to obtain and understand what one is striving for. Nectar is referring to the level of success one is trying to achieve. The defeated understand what victory better than the victorious because they have gone through a lot more hurdles than someone who is victorious easier. The last line of the poem I believe is meant to mean that when the success was finally attained it was through a lot of hard work and sacrifice. The third poem I chose to write about was “Heaven” is   what I cannot reach! By Emily Dickinson .  She treats  Heaven as an unobtainable goal. To me Heaven is obtainable If you know how to get there which is through Jesus Christ. I believe the person who is telling this longs to reach Heaven but does not know how. The next poem that I chose to write about was Home Burial by Robert Frost. This poem speaks of a father and mother who have lost a child. The father has to dig a grave to bury their child in. I think that this is was very hard on him. He so wants for his wife to stay and talk to him instead of leaving and turning to someone else. The mother however feels that he does not care that their child is dead since he was able to dig the grave and go on about his day as if nothing happened. This is a good example of the different ways men and women handle their feelings and emotions. The last poem I chose was Fire and Ice by Robert Frost. Fire is like the desires burning hot in people, maybe even their lies burning inside them. Ice is like the cold hearted people who hate everything and everyone.
